Case Wärtsilä

Sharing an innovation in real-time asset tracking

Haltian got onboard the Innovation Mill program, funded by Tekes, at the end of May 2013. The program aims to enable small companies to commercialize unused innovative ideas from major Finnish corporations, converting them to new products and services. The idea, proposed by Wärtsilä, was to provide better visibility to global high value shipments and logistics operations. The challenge we addressed is quite complex: how a big organization can efficiently follow thousands of devices on the move – without getting lost in the flow of information.

The basic concept of the solution is simple. High-quality connected devices are attached to shipments to measure shocks, vibration, temperature, humidity, location and other local conditions. Devices send sensor data to a backend, and the backend creates a meaningful representation of the data for the end users. This means that only events that matter are shown. The intelligent cloud-based service uses complex algorithms to create meaning and priority for the events, devices, and people in the network. Notifications are sent according to predefined rules, and both web and mobile user interfaces show the network’s devices, people, and events in an intuitive way.
