How to Design a Modern Camera Equipment

The design of a modern camera device is a complex undertaking. It all begins from understanding of the usage requirements. The design can be very different depending on the application area. An industrial camera unit monitoring a factory production line does not have much in common with a trail camera hidden into the woods, or a hand-held scientific camera. Each of these needs to be optimized for a different environment and workload.

The specific requirements on the battery consumption, data bandwidth, and processing performance can be derived from the use cases: camera resolution and frame rate, algorithms to run, where to store the data, and how long the device should operate with a single battery charge.

The following design phases are common during the creation of a modern camera equipment:

  • Hardware platform selection (processors, memories, and workload partitioning)
  • Connectivity choices (wireless, cellular, cable connections)
  • Software platform selection (operating systems and libraries)
  • Device specific technologies (sensors, filters, optics, mechanics)

In this free guidebook our specialists share their insight on things to consider during each of these phases.
